Nēhiyaw Projects & Translations

Community Artist Residencies

Over the years, Joseph has served as resident artist for many communities, both short and long-term. His experience working within community has transformed hearts, minds and policy!

Nēhiyaw Pīkiskwēwin (Cree Language Translator)

“In this land called miskināhko-ministik (Turtle Island), I am one of the few Nēhiyaw/Cree translators/interpreters that provides Cree language translation services for television programs which air on APTN and CBC as well as for universities and school boards. From time to time, I translate a specific word or phrase for private sector businesses, or independent cultural/social organizations to enhance their select conference themes. I frequently work with other artists on language oriented art projects.”

“Become a Cree language student and I will provide private Nēhiyaw Pīkiskwēwin (Cree) lessons over coffee (you buy)!”

Joseph and I shared an office at the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.  I was Superintendent of Education; he was Story Teller in Residence. Joseph spent many hours in classrooms working with students ages 5 through 18.  They loved him and enjoyed working with him.  He sang songs, told stories and generally served as a role model for them. Joseph also worked with the communities. He was instrumental in bringing Saskatchewan published authors to Meadow Lake and area where they worked with interested and aspiring writers. We had singing, art workshops, classroom visits, web site development, touring authors, cultural visitors from the Northwest Territories, digital media, performance theatre, and more.  The North came alive under his influence. Working with Joseph has been one of the highlights of my career.

Bert McNair, retired Superintendent of Education
